“I started emulating the Dobro (resonator guitar) playing of Jerry Douglas at an early age, then quickly moved to be influenced by the steel guitar gospel of Aubrey Ghent and The Campbell Brothers – hopefully, with my songs I span between the two genres with my original songs and playing. I am a singer first, and approach my lead instruments the same way.”
The result of mixing his ample musical talents and a work ethic that does not allow for a minute of rest, is a schedule that is full of interesting and varied performances. Some nights will see Jeff sitting down and delivering a spell binding set of solo folk songs, while others will place Jeff right in the middle of a night of slide guitar driven rock/ soul songs. Still other nights will see him lending his talents to one of the many bands who call Jeff a member.
"Like myself, JP cut his teeth playing with some world-class songwriters...now that he is stepping out on his own, all that work shows and shines; with a voice like a bearded angel and some of the best guitar playing in the Western Hemisphere, he performs songs of depth and weight that belies his age."
-Jon Dee Graham, Songwriter
It's been years since Jeff Plankenhorn has attended a Folk Alliance Conference. At past conferences he has appeared alongside such luminaries as Ray Wylie Hubbard, Slaid Cleaves, Eliza Gilkyson and many other well known acts. Since last attending, Plank has released multiple solo records and continued to add to the list of artists he has recorded or shared the stage with, including Ruthie Foster, Bob Schneider, Joe Ely and so many more. 2015 marks Jeff's return to the Folk Alliance Conference and his first appearance as a front man/ solo act. He is looking forward to playing as many showcases as he possibly can both official and private in addition to the multiple workshops he will be doing in conjunction with Louis Meyers' Folk Store. Jeff will be arriving in Kansas City on Wednesday morning and staying through the end of Sunday, so he will be available to schedule showcases every day of the conference.
